The transition to adulthood is a great challenge, not only to the teen on the spectrum, but to the parents as well. In fact, research show that the transition into adulthood is one of the most stressful times for parents of children with autism. One of the most challenging issues faced by families is trying to figure out what resources might be available, which services may be appropriate for your loved one with autism and which he or she may be eligible for, and how to access those services.
To help parents start to unwind the complexities of adult services, we are pleased to present Tracy Kernan, LCSW, sharing Resources and Supports: Navigating the System for People With Developmental Disabilities. In this installment of our Roadmap to Adulthood series, you will learn about:
Hayley Schapiro, LMSW, is the liaison to YAI’s network of early intervention and school programs including Lifestart, The New York League for Early Learning, and the Manhattan Star Academy. Hayley is part of YAI LINK the information and referral unit for the YAI Network. LINK provides the latest information on programs and services for individuals with disabilities and their families. Hayley attended Columbia University School of Social Work with a clinical focus in education and schools. Hayley also holds a B.S. from Syracuse University graduating Magna Cum Laude. She has experience working with various ages in both school and community based settings.
