The Office for People with developmental disabilities (OPWDD) is the New York State agency responsible for the oversight of services for individuals with a development disability. Many supports and services are provided in NYS through a Medicaid waiver. For children under age 18 and applying for services, parental income is waived.

These services may alleviate a family’s financial burden by thousands of dollars.

The catch is getting through the often lengthy and complex process.

NAA NYM board member Norene Chin recently obtained and now manages OPWDD services for her son, Michael, via Self-Direction, giving the family more control and flexibility.

NAA NYM board member Ken Siri is a dad who also obtained such services for his son and has since become a Self-Direction broker.

Both would like to encourage families who are thinking of applying, who are in the midst of applying, who have been utilizing services for years and their service advocates to come and join us for some in-depth conversation.

Attendees will leave the event with more knowledge as to what to expect when applying for services and managing them for their loved ones.
